So I am finally getting the ball rolling on my greeting cards. The first cards I drew were Halloween scenes. They are silly, fun and remind me of past times. They are inspired from the Department 56 line which is a company that makes really fun, detailed, small, ceramic houses. I am fond of the little houses, some light up others make noise, overall they are loads of fun. The haunted house pictured below is my favorite one in the series and I keep it up year round in my living room. They are quite expensive to collect so I limit myself to one everyother year.
I am naming the Hallowen cards the Magic Potion Series and each card has a back story. I already have someone that wants to put them in an art gallery! What makes these cards so special you ask?! They are printed on 100 lb premium, woven, recycled paper and have no flap and are about the size of an index card. I have been working on Easter, St. Patrick's Day, & Christmas cards.
Two shows that I worked on or designed close this Saturday. Boeing Boeing is playing at Circle Theatre in Fort Worth. To Kill a Mockingbird is playing at the Granville Arts Center presented by Garland Civic Theatre.
For Boeing Boeing I helped Clare DeVries paint some really fun murals on the sides of the stage, kind of 101 Dalmations style. That style that we were trying to replicate is known as xerography. Xerography was used in animation and eased graphic reproduction requirements, but at the price of being unable to deviate from a scratchy outline style because of the new (and time and money saving) technology's limitations. Since the line would not have fit the "round" Disney drawing style used until then (with the exception of Sleeping Beauty), a more graphic, angular style was chosen for this and subsequent films. Rotoscoping, a technique formerly used for tracing live action human characters into animated drawings, became less important. Thanks Wikipedia for the above explanation!
I designed the set for To Kill a Mockingbird and it is a play about five houses and courtroom that fits on a stage that is rather weird and small. The climax of the play was to change the neighborhood into the courtroom in 30 seconds or less but ultimaley fails as the audience sits in the dark for 1 mintue and 30 seconds. It won the pulitzer prize beleive it or not!
