I went grocery shopping last night. As I was leaving the store I saw a Blockbuster Kiosk and I thought I'd better see if they have the Black Swan in stock. Ding Ding Ding! So I went home made dinner, put the movie in and watched. The movie, whitout spoiling it, is about a ballet dancer that dances in New York at the Lincoln Center. She (Natalie Portman) is meek, beautiful & dances perfectly. She ends up getting the leading role in Swan Lake. Her director, in the movie, thinks she is a brillant dancer but he knows that she lacks the sexy, sleek side to play the black swan as she portrays the white swan so beauitfly. Sounds innocent enough? Add blood, sex, murder and obession and you have the Black Swan.
Border's book store in the West Village is closing and I snagged a copy of 'Rice's Architectural Primer'. This book is really well done. The artist and aurthor, Matthew Rice, has traveled abroad and hand drawn very charming, detailed, water color renderings of buildings. I find this book very useful for set design in the theatre. If you are looking for a period door, window, brick, roof you will find it in this book. It even shows a map telling you where style is located in the world. I have many books like this in my library already but it's the charming factor of the illustrations that makes it worth getting. Please note that this book is hard to find, you may have to have it shipped from across seas (London). Or you can try your luck on ebay. I have been busy getting the website for my new greeting card line squared away. Still have some work to do on it but it's looking very good. Then in the next few weeks I get to march downdown and get my DBD (Doing Business As). I thought about getting a LLC but I don't think someone would sue me over a card and take my assets away...then again?! I may have to put a disclaimer about paper cuts on the back of the card just to be sure.
Yeasterday I went with Clare DeVries to take a look at her 'The Traveling Lady' set and it was very well done. The set has a full two story house circa 1930 complete with yard, rolled grass, trees, dirt flowers and little leaves that were spread about the grass and porch in a very natural, non placed sort of way. Most impressive! If you would like to see this show it is currently runing at Water Tower Theatre from April 4th- May 1st. www.watertowertheatre.org
When lunch rolls around for work and if the days happens to be beautiful I will walk to the deli to get a sandwhich. Another reason for the walk is the neighborhood where this deli sits is beautiful. See for your self. Oh, and I looked to see for the heck of it what rent goes for in this area......hahahahaha is all I have to say.
I work at a wonderfuly restored hotel in uptown Dallas as my day job. The hotel is 90+ years old. A few years ago in underwent a $35 million dollor renovation and restored to the 1930's motif inside. Great stars of yester year have graced the hotel; Judy Garland, Margo Jones, Katherine Hepburn and the famous play wright Tennesse Williams. Last night I watched a movie by him called Suddenly Last Summer starring the great Elizabeth Taylor and Katherine Hepburn. Oh, and right down the street from the hotel is the famous Mansion on Turtle Creek where Tennesse Williams wrote Summer and Smoke. Anyway, wonderful movie worth seeing. The movie and play features Catharine Holly, a young woman who seems to go insane after her cousin Sebastian dies on a trip to Europe under mysterious circumstances. Sebastian's mother, Violet Venable, trying to cloud the truth about her son's homosexuality and death, threatens to lobotomize Catharine for her incoherent utterances relating to Sebastian's demise. Finally, under the influence of a truth serum, Catharine tells the gruesome story of Sebastian's death by cannibalism at the hand of local boys whose sexual favors he sought, using Catharine as a device to attract the young men (as he had earlier used his mother). Because of the time when this was written you kinda have to piece the ending together. In the above plot summery it's sounds very clear but you may have to play back scenes to further understand. Overall, a very well acted and written movie.....good ol classics!
