Oh blog, how I have missed you!
I have been really busy ending a job of five years and starting a new one. While doing this I have been really trying to focus on two set designs I have coming up, The Sound of Fanny and Spamalot. I am at the point where it is time to create both of these models. Both are completely different and each have their challenges. Time to glue, paint and create my little worlds. Below is my rendering for The Sound of Fanny.

Almost finished creating the model of the stage for Spamalot. Tuesday I will design the set to place in the model (made of water colored paper backed with foam board). This time around I'm going with 3/8 scale because I like the size. Just need to correct the back wall.
This Wednesday starts a new chapter in my life.
After five years at my current job (will miss working in a really neat Art Deco building that's haunted) I will move down the street to the Ritz Carlton Dallas. This building isn't 90 years old but funny enough it's molded in a 1930's, deco kinda way. The design is by renowned architect, Robert A. M. Stern. Click here to view pictures of the building. I think I just might get in trouble if I post them on my site. GLCT went on a quest in search of casting their upcoming production, the 2005 Tony Award winning musical, Monty Python’s SPAMALOT. The production received 14 Tony Award nominations, winning three, including Best Musical. Monty Python's SPAMALOT is a musical comedy "lovingly ripped off from" the iconic and cult classic 1975 hit film, Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Like the film, it is a highly irreverent parody of the Arthurian Legend, but it differs from the film in many ways. The book is by original Python cast member Eric Idle; with Music by John Du Prez and Eric Idle; and Lyrics by Idle. Both the book and score received Tony Award nominations as well. Crossing over the hills and lands of England (well Lewisville actually), the production team achieved their quest in casting their production. The musical will run October 11 thru November 3, 2013. For tickets and info go to their website: www.glct.org They are: *PRODUCTION TEAM: Directed by Clay White Music Direction by Rebecca Lowrey Choreography by Brandon Harvey Set Design by Joseph Cummings Sound Design by Danica Bergeron Thank you to Chuck Marcelo for my beautiful pictures on my website. I think a little more research and it's time to draft plans and create the model for Spamalot.
Things are starting to slow down for a second. In the past couple of weeks I have gained projects, lost projects and received design inquiries halfway around the world. Was pretty shocked to see a design inquiry from Dubai....Dubai I tell you. I ended up turning a project away after the design consultation process. Why? I didn't want to over commit myself to too many projects and then drag my heels to get them done. It's just not fair to the client. However, it is good news that I am getting this busy! Last night I received a ticket to see Flashdance the Musical. I really enjoyed the show, a lot!
I hope you read my friends post on the Rule of Three. It talked about when at least three set pieces are moving, changing and flying it is more magical and mysteries to the audience. Flashdance has (I counted) between 12-15 things changing at once with projection on top of that most of the time. You didn't know where to look, it was exciting. Sets slid on tracks, curtains swept across the stage, two story sets moved, slid and morphed into lighting fast set changes. As I mentioned earlier this month the set must keep the same pace as the show. Flashdance is a pretty upbeat production with slick dancing, the set mimicked that. Get out your legwarmers and dance like a maniac and dance like you have never danced before. |
My blog is all about the design process, set design, designers I love and architecture. Take a look behind the curtain!
