The past few days has been about seeing theatre in Dallas. Friday I saw Red Light Winter at Second Thought Theatre. Last night I saw Easter by August Strindberg at Undermain Theatre. Undermain pulled out the big guns and brought in a Broadway set designer! Tonight I am seeing Cabaret at The Dallas Theatre Center. Local set designer, Bob Lavalle, has designed the set.

Saw an amazing piece of theatre last night at Second Thought Theatre. The talanted Regan Adair directed Red Light Winter brilliantly while designing and costuming this show. This play was in conderation for the Pulizer Price but didn't win...well actually nobody won that year. The performances were mesmerizing and perfectly cast. The small, three person cast understood everyone's chacacters giving devastatingly strong performances that you will remeber for long time. Today I met with Clare at the Coffee Generator early this morning to talk about stuff we like and are influenced by. I showed her a rendering for The Mikado. This is kinda neat because she designed this same show for this same theatre company a few years ago. It's always fun to work on a show that you have designed and look at someone else's idea on the same show you designed. I did two water color renderings today and they were a bit to big to scan into the computer. I had two scan it in sections. But I think you get the idea. Oh, if you didn't understand the title post it's the name of a song in the show.
This morning I drew my first attempt to draw in the style of Edward Gorey as he has been influential this week. What do ya think?!
On youtube I found the intro to Mystry hosted on PBS in the 80's. The animation at the begining of the show was all Edward Gorey. I am willing to bet Tim Burton was inspred by this artist. I know I most definitley love his work and want his bat cufflinks! I managed to pick up a copy of a paperback book called 'Best Seat in the House' circa 1985, pre internet. It listed all of the current theatre layouts in the Dallas Fort Worth area. Lets say you picked up a newspaper and saw a play that you wanted to see. Well how do you know where your seat is located, where is seat 23 row A?! This book helps you pick out your seat and see how close you are to the stage. You find the theatre your attending, you look at the chart from the book, you call the number in the newspaper or phone book, you talk to the person on the phone, pre order your ticket, pick your ticket up at will call...paying with cash or check only and TA DA it's as simple as that! The book even goes as far as telling you if they have valet parking or not, and what type of concessions they have. The theatre I do most of my design work is listed below. Here is the first rendering I worked on this morning. I am going to do a watercolor, pencil and ink rendering later on today. The design I want calls for a 25' long fan that splits down the middle and moves on casters with 2 hidden pocket doors in the fan.
Edward Gory is an artist with a very particular look. His style of drawings are mostly done with black ink and sometimes hand colored. His work is fun with a dark edge but has charm and style. Visit him at www.goreystore.com
