I put this blog together so you can see how a concept becomes a reality.
When I am asked to design a show I have no idea what the set will look like at first. My first response is "oh cool!" or "oh boy..." I sit down, walk through the show scene by scene and take measurements of the stage. I then think about the aesthetic and concept. This idea of the what the show could look like might be inspired by a photo, like below. I then create a quick drawing of the idea (approved by producer and director). Later I take the measurements and start scaling the design to fit in the pace (keeping budget in mind). Once plans are drawn and scaled (1/4 scale is preferred) I create the model. Sometimes I find missing measurements when constructing the model and can add them in the plans. From top to bottom, left to right you can see my thought process for this production of Hamlet performed and produced by Fun House Theatre and Film. © 2013 Stage Design by Joseph.
