Synopsis
"Is He Dead?" is a comedic farce written by Mark Twain, adapted by David Ives. The play follows the misadventures of a struggling French artist named Jean-Francois Millet, who, in an effort to escape debt and gain recognition, fakes his own death. To increase the value of his paintings, he disguises himself as his nonexistent sister, "Daisy Tillou," and creates a new persona. As Millet navigates his double life, he encounters a series of hilarious complications, including romantic entanglements, mistaken identities, and encounters with art dealers and creditors. As the plot unfolds, Millet's ruse becomes increasingly elaborate, leading to uproarious situations and unexpected twists. Filled with wit, slapstick humor, and clever wordplay, "Is He Dead?" is a delightful romp that satirizes the art world and explores themes of deception, ambition, and the lengths people will go to achieve success.
