Never heard of it? Perhaps that’s because Mel Brooks’ Young Frankenstein opened a week later on Broadway. Frankenstein closed little more than a month later. Young Frankenstein continued for more than a year and launched two national tours. Why does one show seize the imagination and another slip from view? Is it talent? Timing? Or does it tell us something about the audience? Dallas-Fort Worth theater fans can examine that question over overlapping musical versions of two musicals adapted from the 1910 Phantom of the Opera novel by Gaston Leroux. There’s the hotly awaited new national tour of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Phantom of the Opera, with bells, whistles and chandelier, which opens Wednesday at the Winspear Opera House at the AT&T Performing Arts Center. Then there’s the MainStage Irving-Las Colinas community theater production of the Maury Yeston Phantom, which concludes its run at Irving Arts Center Aug. 9. Click here to read more.
