I went to the real Scarborough Faire Sunday....not just a song. I ate ye old meat wraps and ye fresh Italian Ice, they were good! This is a Renaissance festival and the style of buildings are over the place. Some are Elizabeathan era, whimsical made up style, bad, please tear this down now, to 1-2 maybe accurate renaissance castles. All in all I had a fun time people watching. I even saw a Fred Flintstone here?! I have been coming here for 21 years and it really has not changed all that much expect the mature trees where you can seek a cool break. You can even have authentic Renaissance food like macaroni n cheese and nachos.
My blog side bar seems to be temporarily down. Don't be sad! It should be fixed soon.
Paris Opera House Sunday I went to Half Price Books and picked up a pictorial history book on Gilbert and Sullivan. It's shows original sets, costumes, actors and so on. I bought it to help me on my current G&S show. Also picked up a book that shows some of Charles Garnier's projects that he worked on. If you don't know who Charles Garnier is he designed the world famous Paris Opera House and other amazing projects. Both neat books. The picture to the left is a hallway in the Paris Opera House. Today I saw Pirates of the Caribbean part 9... or was it part 7... oh I can't remember. I couldn't help but think that the only reason that they made this movie was to put people in Dinseyland and make money on the famous ride. Yes I had a swashbuckling, jolly ole good time aboard some enchanted pirate ship while Johnny Depp swaggered around up to a scheme for two hours. Disney shelled out the doe to over produce a film that they have made over and over but I miss movies with great acting and deep plot. I think this is why I like going to theatre.
Their is nothing more exceting than going into your first production meeting. Everyone is happy, excited and not killing one another. It's a table of fresh ideas and good times. I will be working with the very talanted Morgana Shaw, who will be directing, and Ryan Smith the award winning costumer who is currently working on a couple of shows on Broadway...well actually they both have shows on Broadway! I will be presenting a watercolor rendering with a ground plan. We shall see what happens on Monday.
I have had food poisoning for the past 24 hours. Will not be eating milkshakes and burgers for a long time. I feel much better today.
Going to the Music Hall at Fair Park this Sunday night to see the US touring production of 9 to 5. This is yet another show I know nothing about. It's been a week of surprise theatre. Not knowing anything about the show or having any expectations has been most enjoyable. This year has been a great year of theatre in Dallas and more is still to come! Last night was most enjoyable at The Dallas Theatre Center. I went into this musical not knowing any songs, what it was about or anything. Wow! The set design was wonderful. They transformed the theatre into a club, they even had cocktail service. Pretty cool to stretch the design that far!
