Some of my favorite set designs I have created over the years.  The two things these shows have in common are 1) They were photographed by Chuck Marcelo, www.marcelomedia.com and 2) The set budget was $700 or less for the entire look. Even if you have a small budget you MUST make sure the finishing details are there.  I have been known to dumpster dive on occasion, in the name of design!

Another little sneak peek on what I am working on. 

I'm designing a show that goes up in October and work has already begun on the design concept.  Below is one of twenty some odd set changes.

I like my floor plan for Spamalot.  I hope the Director does too!

Looks like things are going to get busy this September and October.  I have two big musicals (one original and the other an area premier) and the hardest farce of all time, Noises Off (opens in another state) .  

So, I need to start working on these designs now to be ready by summer-early fall.

I put this blog together so you can see how a concept becomes a reality.

When I am asked to design a show I have no idea what the set will look like at first.  My first response is "oh cool!" or "oh boy..." I sit down, walk through the show scene by scene and take measurements of the stage.  I then think about  the aesthetic and concept.  This idea of the what the show could look like might be inspired by a photo, like below.  I then create a quick drawing of the idea (approved by producer and director).  Later I take the measurements and start scaling the design to fit in the pace (keeping budget in mind). Once plans are drawn and scaled (1/4 scale is preferred) I create the model.  Sometimes I find missing measurements when constructing the model and can add them in the plans.
